Prior to starting his own law firm, Bertram clerked at the New Jersey Superior Court for the Hon. Verna Leath in Essex County. Bertram also worked for Criminal Attorney Jeffrey Cohn, where he worked in defense of his clients in New York Federal, Appellate and State criminal and civil matters.

Bertram completed his undergraduate studies at Tufts University. Bertram attended Rutgers Law School and was a recipient of the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey Scholarship and the Eric R. Neisser Pro Bono Service Award. While at law school, he interned at firms including Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP, in Newark, NJ and participated in a Judicial externship in the Civil part of the New Jersey Superior Court in Essex county.

Bertram is active in his community. He has helped Jersey City organizations that help Jersey City Tenants. He has worked as an Adjunct Professor for the Rutgers Law School and served as Vice Chair for the Kindle Education Charter School. He serves as trustee for the Learning Community Charter School and the Youth Foundation of Jersey City. He is also a former trustee of the Jersey City Board of Education, the Rutgers Law School Newark Alumni Association, and a former board member of the Solo and Small Firm Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association.
